The Influence of Groundwater Flux on Periphyton Growth
SUMMARY
The aquatic biology in western rivers differs from that in the eastern U.S. Specifically, attached algae, or periphyton, play a major role in nutrient dynamics in the Truckee River.
The experimental setup (below) will evaluate the effect of groundwater flux on algae growth.
Results of this experiment will be used to quantify the role of periphyton on Truckee River water quality.
A better understanding of the influence of algae on in-stream water quality will allow for better management of the river.
